KFC So Racist!

Despite the stereotype that African-Americans love them some fried chicken, the majority of customers of Kentucky Fried Chicken (or KFC, for you hipsters) are most likely of the Caucasian persuasion. Common sense dictates that this is the case because America is still the land of Caucasia, a fact that is lost on KFC’s global marketing staffs in how they advertise their product.

In this first example, Australian viewers are treated to a white person’s — and KFC’s by proxy — opinion of the preference for fried chicken by those of West Indian descent. Set your faces to stunned!

Yeah. The charming accent don’t erase racism, douchebucket.

Oh, and speaking of accents, KFC doesn’t think much of Asians as well. Remember their huge marketing push for Kentucky Grilled Chicken? The original commercial was like a visual version of “one of these things is not like the other.” See what that one thing is here:

I personally can’t wait for the next big product from KFC. Maybe their Triple Down sandwich — which I assume is under production after the stunning masterpiece/heart attack known as the Double Down — can contain three fried chicken breasts and a heaping side of Muslim hatred. Till that fertile ground, KFC!

  1. I could be wrong, but isn’t that KFC stereotype about black people mainly US-centric? Before moving to this country from Canada, I had never been aware of it (and I’m guessing Canadians who knew about it got it from exposure to US media). Since this is an Australian ad, is it possible that you’re projecting local prejudices globally? Aussies aren’t perfect by any means, but whatever flaws they do share might not be expressed the same way.

I’m not sold on the idea that the first ad is racist, as there is a cultural context to consider; unless someone can show that the same sterotype exists over there, then it is simply a flawed hypothesis. The second ad, on the other hand, does not have any acceptable reasons to have been created that way.

  2. I think it’s rather funny that Australians are getting a lesson in cultural sensitivity from someone who thinks Australia is in Europe.

The stereotype about African-Americans and fried chicken isn’t at all well-known outside the US, and doesn’t apply here anyway because the people in the crowd are West Indian.
