Billionaire Donald Trump Unveils Flying Car Plans

NEW YORK — Business and entertainment mogul Donald Trump revealed components of his flying car project Tuesday, with aims for automobiles to be sky-bound in the next 10 years.

Trump believes that the flying car, with equipment to attain and maintain cruising altitudes, the latest in safety devices, and a pressurized, oxygen-sealed, dome-like capsule to keep passengers comfortable, will speed up travel times.

“The flying car will be the new gold standard for transportation,” Trump said in a press conference. “I envision the skies filled with these beacons of travel as far as the eye can see, shuttling to Trump-owned hotels and other luxurious businesses.”

Trump says that the flying car will maintain speeds up to 250 mph, flight times upward of 1,000 miles on a single tank of gasoline, and the ability to fold into a briefcase. He notes that the design borrows from current technology, adding that it was influenced by science fiction works.

While Trump is not planning to manufacture the car himself, he is offering the design as a challenge for the world’s innovators to improve upon his imaginative work. Plans are in the beginning stages for a reality show to display the top creations based on Trump’s vision.

Skeptics of Trump’s plans point to an undeveloped infrastructure for car flight as well as the billions of dollars needed to create an interstate system. In an official statement Tuesday, David Strickland, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said that Trump’s plans would require an “overhaul of conventional vehicle safety, manufacturing, fuel economy and emissions standards to realize the momentous task.”
